Easy Smothered Chicken (Light Gravy)

This easy smothered chicken is tender, juicy, and covered in a light, flavorful gravy. It’s a comforting, home-style dish that’s simple enough for weeknights but satisfying enough for any meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 large chicken breasts or 4 small pieces
  • 2 tablespoons oil or butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 small onion thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons milk for lighter gravy

Method

  1. Season the chicken with salt, pepper, and paprika.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat and cook the chicken until golden on both sides. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, sauté onions until soft, then add garlic and cook briefly.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir well to form a base.
  5. Slowly pour in chicken broth while whisking to avoid lumps.
  6. Let the gravy simmer until slightly thickened.
  7. Return the chicken to the pan, cover, and cook for 10–15 minutes until fully cooked.
  8. Add a splash of milk if desired and adjust seasoning before serving.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat gently with a splash of broth to loosen the gravy.
  • You can add mushrooms or bell peppers for extra flavor and texture.
