Black Velvet Halloween Cake

A dark, dramatic Halloween cake made with black cocoa for a midnight hue, layered with silky cream cheese frosting, and decorated with spooky sprinkles. Perfect for a Halloween party centerpiece!

Ingredients
  

Cake:
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup black cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water
Frosting & Decoration:
  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Halloween sprinkles or decorations optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix flour, black cocoa, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk sugar, buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla.
  4. Gradually add dry mixture into wet, then stir in hot water until smooth.
  5. Divide into pans and bake 30–35 minutes. Cool completely.
  6. Beat cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla for frosting.
  7. Frost cakes, stack layers, and decorate with sprinkles.
