Baked Mac and Cheese (Cookout Favorite)

This baked mac and cheese is rich, creamy, and topped with a perfectly golden crust. It’s the ultimate comfort food and a must-have side dish for any cookout or family gathering.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk warm
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika optional
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs optional for topping

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish lightly.
  2. Cook the macaroni according to package instructions until just al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Gradually whisk in warm milk and cream, stirring until smooth and thickened.
  5. Reduce heat and add shredded cheeses, stirring until fully melted.
  6. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
  7. Combine the cheese sauce with cooked macaroni and mix well.
  8. Pour into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  9. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top if using.
  10. Bake for 20–25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.
  11. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat with a splash of milk to keep it creamy.
  • Add cooked chicken or beef for a heartier version.
  • Swap cheeses based on preference for different flavor profiles.
